Consumer Obsession

Obsession

When I first heard about today’s prompt of “Obsession” I immediately thought of the hedonic cycle and our societal obsession with purchasing more.  It seems as though we feel this consumer pressure to buy the latest and greatest.  I looked through a magazine and found that of the 242 total pages, 126 were filled with advertisements (52% of the magazine). The New York Times estimates that the average person is exposed to over 5,000 ads per day, reinforcing some of our obsessions with products. The picture attached is a collage of the advertisements found in the magazine. It is intended to depict the inundation of advertising noise that we experience on a day to day basis, reinforcing our obsession with consumerism.  I also tried to integrate a layering effect, mimicking the Ode de Joy video we watched on Wednesday.

  1. Nice! 5000 images a day. That's scary. I'm glad I don't have cable! Probably takes me down to 4000. :-)
